Community Resource Speakers

Each week, professionals from the community join the parenting class to offer information on a variety of topics, from family violence and prevention, health and wellness and the prevention of illness, nutrition, financial literacy seminars, safety in the home and life coping skills. We have heard from families and seen firsthand the impact the new knowledge has had on families.

Many parents, especially moms, feel isolated before they enter the program. Exposure to the variety of resources available to them in their community builds confidence and reduces fear to seek out what they need. When parents seek a service they have been made aware of, they are well-prepared. Being able to access needed services helps to reduce the stress in their lives. Parents are empowered to advocate for themselves and their families.

In addition to coming to our classes, community resource speakers and partners welcome our families to experience their services firsthand.  Parents and children enjoy our annual trip to Cameron Park Zoo and the McLennan County Waco Central Library. Parents get to try out a Zumba class at the YMCA and explore the Mayborn Museum.

The agencies that come to speak to the parents become more aware and responsive to the needs of the community. Their partnership with AVANCE becomes one with a shared mission and AVANCE parents tend to be served better.
